about

Open Spiral documents a set of duo improvisations between new to Chicago pianist and composer Erez Dessel and veteran percussionist Tim Daisy. Six open ended tracks exploring a wide range of sounds and gestures from intricate textural landscapes to full force free jazz cacophony. Recorded one sunny afternoon in December at The Experimental Sound Studio in Chicago.

Erez Dessel is an improviser, pianist, composer, and educator. After winning multiple Downbeat Student Music Awards, Dessel moved to Boston to study at the New England Conservatory of Music , where he worked with a host of musical luminaries including Billy Hart, Ethan Iverson, and Jason Moran. While in Boston he performed regularly, including at the Celebrity Series festival Jazz Along the Charles, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and Wally’s Jazz Club. Dessel’s work also expands beyond the piano, he received a grant from NEC’s Entrepreneurial Musicianship department to score and record an independent film soundtrack (Missing First Period) and produced the multidisciplinary concert Mosaic as a part of the Nova Fellowship program. After graduating from NEC in 2020, Dessel moved to Savannah, GA to accept the position of music director at the Savannah Music Festival Jazz Academy, Savannah’s first and only free after-school youth jazz program. While in Georgia, he maintained an intense artistic practice, including presenting multidisciplinary piano works at the Savannah Cultural Arts Center, Georgia Southern University, and throughout the Atlanta improv scene. He currently lives in Chicago, where he continues to work on music centered around exploring improvisation, graphic notation, and polyrhythmic structures. He frequently works with cassette tapes, and is currently developing ways to paint with the piano using charcoal, pastel, paper, and linen.

Tim Daisy is an American drummer and composer working in the fields of improvised and composed music. Tim moved to Chicago in 1997 and since that time has performed, recorded, and toured with many national and international improvised musicians and ensembles.
